Find Your Voice: Create a Brand Tone That Truly Connects.

Your brand is speaking to people every day, whether you're posting on social media, writing website copy, sending emails, or creating marketing campaigns. The question is: does it sound like you?

Many businesses invest significant time and money into their logo, website, and visual identity, yet give far less attention to how they communicate. A strong brand voice is what helps customers recognise you, trust you, and remember you. Without it, even the most polished marketing can feel disconnected or inconsistent.

Creating a distinctive voice is not about sounding clever or following the latest trends. It is about communicating in a way that reflects who you are as a business and resonates with the people you want to reach.

What Is Brand Voice?

Your brand voice is the personality behind your communications. It reflects your values, your culture, and the way you want customers to perceive your business.

Think of it this way: if your brand walked into a room and started a conversation, how would it speak?  Would it be confident and authoritative? Friendly and approachable? Expert and insightful? Perhaps a combination of all three.

Unlike individual marketing campaigns, your brand voice should remain relatively stable. It is the consistent thread that runs through everything you do regardless of who you’re speaking to.  It’s the same with humans – we might change our tone depending on who we’re speaking to, but our personality always remains the same.

For example, the same business might communicate differently when it’s announcing company news to internal staff compared to when it’s responding to customer feedback but it should still sounds like it’s coming from the same business.

Why Brand Voice Matters

People buy from brands they trust and consistency plays a huge role in building that trust.

When your messaging feels different from one channel to another, it can create confusion so a clear and recognisable brand voice helps remove that uncertainty.

It can also strengthen every element of your content marketing strategy.

When your voice is well defined, creating content becomes easier. Teams spend less time debating wording, campaigns feel more cohesive and customers receive a more consistent experience.

A strong brand voice can help you:

  • Build stronger emotional connections
  • Differentiate yourself from competitors
  • Improve brand recognition
  • Create more engaging content
  • Support consistent branding across channels
  • Develop long-term customer trust

In short, your voice becomes one of your most valuable brand assets.

Start With Who You Are

Before defining how you sound, you need to understand who you are.

Many businesses make the mistake of creating a tone based on what competitors are doing. While it can be useful to understand market expectations, your voice should reflect your own identity rather than someone else’s.

The Chalk & Ward proprietary Core Values session helps businesses understand what they stand for in the market, what their personality is and what values are at the heart of their brand.  We consider the relevance to your audience and the differences with your competitors.

These are the values that should guide your voice.  Your voice will then feel authentic to your business but also resonate with your audience and stand you apart from the competition.

Create Tone of Voice Guidelines

Once you’ve developed your tone, one of the best ways to maintain consistency is to put down the rules in clear tone of voice guidelines. This way, whoever is creating content or communications on behalf of the brand, whether it’s internal teams or an external agency, they are all singing from the same hymn sheet.

These guidelines don’t need to be lengthy or complicated. In fact, simpler is often better.

A practical guide might include:

Your Core Values

How you position yourselves in the market and your values

Brand Personality

A summary of who you are as a business and how you want to be perceived.

Core Voice Attributes

The key characteristics that define your communication style.

Do’s and Don’ts

Examples of language that supports your brand and language that does not.

Examples in Context

Demonstrate how your voice should be applied across different channels as real examples are often more valuable than lengthy explanations.

Your Content Marketing Strategy

Your brand voice should not sit in a document that nobody reads, it needs to be actively integrated into everything you do, most importantly, your content marketing strategy.

Every piece of content should reinforce who you are and what you stand for so before putting it out there, ask yourself:

  • Does this sound like us?
  • Does it align with our values?
  • Would our audience recognise this as our content?
  • Is the tone appropriate for the channel?

Customers experience your brand across multiple touchpoints every day.  This is where consistent branding extends beyond logos and colours because the words you use become just as important as the visuals you create.

Over time, this consistency helps create stronger brand recognition and deeper audience connections.

Final Thoughts

Your brand voice is more than a marketing exercise. It is a reflection of who you are, what you stand for, and how you build relationships with your audience.

By defining your voice, creating practical tone of voice guidelines, and embedding them within your content marketing strategy, you can create communications that feel more authentic, more consistent and more memorable.
